Security companies regularly scan drivers’ licenses and vehicle license discs to permit entry into large premises and estates. However, have you thought about what the security service provider may be doing to safeguard your personal information; or perhaps gone a step further and asked them?

Under the POPI Act,* processing of personal information is limited to specific purposes. Once a responsible party can justify the processing, its actions need to comply with listed conditions for lawful processing. Part of this involves putting safeguards in place to protect personal information from being shared unlawfully, and to uphold confidentiality.

Data subject participation is another condition for lawful processing. As a data subject, you have the right to request the responsible party to confirm whether or not it holds personal information about you and request the record or description of personal information held by it. You may also request it to correct or delete inaccurate, excessive, misleading or unlawfully obtained information about you.

As a company, we take your privacy seriously and are fully compliant with the POPI Act. If one of our Cloud Track AMS devices is used to capture your driver’s license and license disc details, you can rest assured that your data is safe. Your personal information is stored in a  Tier 3 data centre located in Johannesburg. The entity operating the data centre is compliant with both the POPI Act and the EU’s General Data Protection Regulation.

After a period of five years, your data is deleted and the hard drives on which your personal information is stored are physically destroyed.
